We were excited to welcome the first group of OMBA students and the twelfth team from the University of Michigan to Mulanje since 2018. Their visit marked a continuation of our ongoing collaboration with the University and reinforced our shared commitment to creating meaningful, sustainable impact in the communities we serve.
This group supported Othakarhaka Foundation in developing a comprehensive volunteer management strategy. Among the visitors were Chris Corbett, James Francis, Jesse Gagnon, Mackenzie Oldfield, and their professor, Lisa Pawlik. The framework they helped design will guide us as we expand our volunteer programs to include both local and international participants, ensuring that our systems are efficient, inclusive, and sustainable.
For years, Othakarhaka has relied on the dedication of local volunteers to drive positive change in their communities. With the reintroduction of international volunteers, it was essential to establish a structured approach that strengthens coordination, enhances the volunteer experience, and maximizes the impact of our programs. The students worked closely with our team to design processes that improve onboarding, communication, and support for all volunteers.
Their visit strengthened our internal capacity and fostered a culture of global collaboration. By combining the insights and skills of international students with the knowledge and experience of our local volunteers, we built a model of service rooted in kindness, effectiveness, and shared learning.
We are grateful for the continued partnership with the University of Michigan and proud of the strategies and ideas this second group of students brought. Their work will help ensure that Othakarhaka can continue to expand its programs, support more communities, and make a lasting difference.
