The devastating effects of a powerful cyclone that swept through Malawi and other parts of South-Eastern Africa in March left a trail of destruction, claiming over a thousand lives and wreaking havoc on farmlands. Floodwaters swallowed crops, homes crumbled, and the specter of hunger loomed large over the region for the 2023 and part of the 2024 planting seasons.
In response to this dire situation, Othakarhaka Foundation (OTK), supported by the generous aid of I Demand Access, extended a vital lifeline to 1200 farmers from 9 irrigation schemes within Mulanje District in South Malawi. The collaboration aimed to shield these resilient farmers from the imminent threat of hunger by providing essential farm inputs.
The impact of this partnership was nothing short of transformative, with farmers witnessing remarkable results. I Demand Access’s timely provision of farm inputs safeguarded crops and significantly boosted the economic prospects of these farmers. With increased yields, many found themselves empowered economically, able to trade surplus maize for sustenance and additional income. Furthermore, these resources enabled them to rebuild homes ravaged by the cyclone, symbolizing resilience in the face of adversity.
Regina Mkumbira, a beneficiary farmer, echoes the sentiments of many as she expresses profound gratitude to OTK and I Demand Access for the timely intervention. Her renewed hope fuels aspirations of venturing into small-scale business endeavors, a testament to the transformative power of this support.
The collaboration with I Demand Access embodies our commitment to #passingonthekindness and highlights the strength found in collective resilience. Together, we navigate through adversity, planting seeds of hope that blossom into brighter futures for our communities.
