In March, Othakarhaka Foundation had the honour of hosting Martha Mereso Sengeruan, Executive Director of the Engaruka Community Initiative Organisation (ENCO), during her visit to Malawi.
Martha is a Tanzanian Maasai leader and educator whose work focuses on expanding access to education, advancing climate justice, and creating opportunities for women and young people in her community. Being the first in her family to attend school, her journey has shaped a deep commitment to giving back, including founding Engaruka English Medium Primary School.
During her time with us, Martha spent time with the team, sharing her story and engaging in conversations around community-led development and the realities our communities face.
Her visit also included time in the field. She toured the Othakarhaka community clinic and learned more about the different programs we run. At Nkanda Primary School, we planted trees together and revisited some that were planted years ago, now fully grown. As someone who actively advocates for climate justice, this was a meaningful moment for both her and the team.
Martha also expressed interest in the Bricks of Hope Housing Project, implemented in partnership with IDI Africa. To give her a full experience, we joined the community and volunteers for a house handover ceremony. This particular home marked a step forward for the project, as it was the first to be fitted with solar panels and lighting, supported by Zuwa Energy.
We also visited other beneficiary households where solar lighting has been installed. Throughout these visits, Martha spent time engaging directly with community members , listening, asking questions, and sharing experiences from Tanzania. It became clear how similar many of the challenges are across our communities, which made the exchange both open and genuine.
Her visit was a reminder of the value of connection, creating space to learn from one another, reflect on shared challenges, and strengthen the work being done in our respective communities.
At Othakarhaka, these moments matter. They reflect what it means to pass on the kindness, not only through programs, but through relationships, shared experiences, and learning across borders.
