Restoring Stability: Malita Nivala’s New Home

Malita Nivala, an 85-year-old grandmother from Magombo Village in Mulanje, had spent years as the sole guardian of her nine orphaned grandchildren. After a severe storm caused her house to collapse, the family was left without shelter. The children had to find refuge wherever they could, while Malita remained in the damaged structure. This situation disrupted their daily lives and created constant insecurity and stress for the family.

Through the Bricks of Hope Housing Project, supported by Othakarhaka Foundation in partnership with IDI Africa, Malita and her grandchildren now have a safe, dignified home. The new house has solid walls, a strong roof, and a secure floor, allowing the entire family to live together once more.

Beyond providing physical protection, this project restores stability, family cohesion, and a sense of hope for the future. Malita’s experience demonstrates how thoughtful, community-led interventions can address both immediate needs and long-term well-being, highlighting the impact of collaborative efforts in rebuilding lives after crisis.
