Global Kindness in Action: Othakarhaka Welcomes Ross School of Business MBA Students

In March 2025, Othakarhaka Foundation proudly hosted two MBA teams from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan as part of their Multidisciplinary Action Projects (MAP). Over the course of three inspiring weeks, these students collaborated with our team on two impactful projects: expanding to new catchment areas and increasing locally sourced funding, efforts that will have lasting impact on our sustainability and community reach.

A Warm Welcome to the Ross MBA Teams

We were honored to welcome two dynamic MBA teams from the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business to Othakarhaka Foundation in Mulanje. Their arrival marked the beginning of a powerful three-week journey of learning, sharing, and meaningful collaboration. From day one, their energy and willingness to serve reminded us that kindness knows no borders.

Supporting Schools and Uplifting Girls

As part of our school outreach, the MBA teams joined us in visiting Nkanda Primary School and Milonga Community Day Secondary School. Together, we distributed footballs and hygiene essentials including underwear for girls to help promote confidence, and full participation in school activities. For many girls in rural areas, access to such basics can determine whether they stay in school or drop out. Their smiles said it all: they felt seen, supported, and celebrated.

Welcoming Professor Ted London

We had the incredible privilege of hosting Professor Ted London, one of Othakarhaka’s strongest global allies and a new member of our Executive Board. As the faculty advisor for the MBA students’ projects, his presence brought deep insight, strategic direction, and a renewed sense of purpose. His longtime partnership with OTK continues to inspire how we build models of kindness and sustainability that empower Malawian communities.

Tree Planting at Mtendere Primary

Climate action came alive at Mtendere Primary School, where OTK staff, Ross MBA students, and schoolchildren planted trees together, a symbol of our shared commitment to a greener, healthier future. For the children, it wasn’t just a fun experience, it was a reminder that they have the power to shape the world around them.

OTK Girls vs. Ross MBA: A Friendly Match

Sports met sisterhood in a thrilling friendly match between our OTK Girls Soccer Team and the MBA students. While UMICH took the win 2-1, the day was all about fun, unity, and empowerment. The true victory was in the friendships formed, the barriers broken, and the confidence gained. For many of our girls, sports offer more than fun, it offers strength, teamwork, and pride.

Giving Back: Community Gift Distribution

Before their departure, the Ross MBA students organized a heartfelt gift distribution to the surrounding people around the villages, a final act of kindness that deeply moved everyone involved.

Farewell Celebration: Culture and Connection

We said goodbye in true OTK fashion with a vibrant celebration in traditional wear, featuring outfits made by our tailoring graduates.

From strangers to family, a beautiful farewell rooted in culture, creativity, and shared As the Ross School of Business MBA teams wrapped up their time with us, one thing was clear: this was more than a student project it was a deeply human exchange of knowledge, culture, and compassion. Their presence reminded us that kindness is not limited by geography, and that powerful change happens when hearts and minds come together.

From planting trees and mentoring youth to dancing in “chitenje” at our farewell celebration, these three weeks were filled with moments we will carry with us forever.

To the students, to Professor Ted London, and to our incredible volunteers and communities, “zikomo kwambiri”. Thank you for believing in our mission to pass on the kindness.
