Foundations of Change: Othakarhaka’s Bricks of Hope in Action

In 2025, the Bricks of Hope Housing Project, in partnership with IDI Africa, continues to transform lives across Mulanje. So far, eight homes have been built since January 2025, six which have already been handed over to families in need, and two more are under construction. With a consistent pace of two houses each month, this project is helping to ensure that vulnerable female headed families no longer have to live in unsafe and unstable conditions.

The Bricks of Hope initiative is about more than building houses, it’s about restoring dignity and peace of mind. Each home brings renewed confidence to families who have spent years enduring unsafe housing, uncertain nights, and harsh weather without protection.

From foundation to finish: Progress photos from recent builds under the Bricks of Hope Housing Project.

One of the most moving moments this year came in March, when Felista, a 95-year-old woman caring for six grandchildren, became the first beneficiary of the month. Her original home was destroyed by Cyclone Freddy in March 2023, leaving her homeless. Since then, she had been living in a small, unsecured space generously offered by a kind neighbour. Though grateful for the temporary shelter, securing food and other basic necessities remained a daily struggle. With nowhere else to go, her situation was dire. The Bricks of Hope Housing Project stepped in and built her a new, solid house, a space where she can now raise her grandchildren with safety and peace.

Each story like Felista’s is a reminder of why Othakarhaka does this work. Every home we build is a symbol of community love and support and a stepping stone toward a better future for the families we serve.

When we build homes, we build hope.

At Othakarhaka, we are committed to providing secure, lasting housing for Malawi’s most vulnerable. Our focus is on female-headed families who have lost their homes due to cyclones, orphans, and elderly caregivers especially grandparents living in poor, dilapidated shelters.

With just USD 1,500, you can help build a safe home that offers dignity, comfort, and protection for generations.

Join us in passing on the kindness. Together, we can rebuild lives, one brick at a time.
