Meet Promise Maononga, a resilient single mother of 2 who successfully graduated from OTK Sewing School. After completing her tailoring and fashion designing course, Promise and fellow single mothers from her class, each received a sewing machine and startup materials to start their own tailoring businesses.
Today, Promise thrives as the owner of a thriving Tailoring Shop in her village, transforming vibrant African prints into exquisite garments, including school uniforms, women’s wear, and men’s wear. At Othakarhaka Foundation, we take immense pride in young women like Promise, navigating the challenges of single motherhood with courage.
This transformative program showcases the potent impact of empowering those in need, enabling young mothers in rural Malawi to sustain themselves and support their children through skills development.
Othakarhaka Foundation initiated a sewing school project exclusively dedicated to providing tailored training for abandoned teen mothers who may be incapable of returning to formal schooling. These young women immerse themselves in the art of fashion design, an in-demand skill in rural areas in Malawi. Upon completing their training, they receive a starter pack, including a sewing machine, to kickstart their own tailoring ventures.
Our distinctive approach involves a commitment from these empowered teen mothers to repay our organization the cost of a sewing machine for a period of 10 months. This financial contribution supports the next cohort of aspiring teen and single mothers requiring the same empowerment.
At the moment, Promise has completed repaying for her sewing machine and she is now building her own house to live with her two children.
