Every year since 2017, Othakarhaka Foundation has held a week that celebrates creativity, learning and growth for our sponsored girls. From July 27 to August 1, this year’s Girls’ Art Empowerment Camp brought together bright minds, caring mentors and a vibrant programme designed to inspire, uplift and build confidence.
The camp opened with energy and excitement. Volunteer teachers from the United States led engaging sessions in music, drama, dance, poetry, storytelling, writing and visual art. The girls were encouraged to explore new ways of expressing themselves, to think boldly, and to discover their voice through creative practice. Amid the colours, words and rhythm of the day, there were also important conversations about health and wellbeing, ensuring that every participant felt supported and affirmed.
On the second day, the group joined together for a meaningful tree-planting activity. The volunteer teachers planted different trees symbolising growth, hope and the shared responsibility we have toward our environment and each other. The students and some of the local volunteers also planted other trees in place of some sponsors that were not around and have shown commitment to continue watering the plants for them as a way of appreciation. The moment captured the spirit of the camp: rooted in community, strengthened by kindness, and focused on building something that lasts beyond the week.
The camp concluded with a joyful graduation event filled with smiles, applause and heartfelt celebration. The girls showcased what they had worked on throughout the week—through performances, spoken-word, dance and music. Families and supporters joined in the celebration, witnessing the confidence and creativity that had blossomed, and we also had performances from our guest artist. Each participant received a certificate of attendance, a powerful reminder that they belong, they matter and that their potential is limitless.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to EKAMUSA and all the other sponsors for sponsoring this year’s camp, and to all the volunteer teachers, partners and friends who made this experience possible. At Othakarhaka Foundation, we believe that when girls are empowered, they rise and they lift others with them.
Thank you for being part of this journey of passing on the kindness.
