Bridging the Digital Divide: News Corp Donates Laptops to OTK Library

In March 2025, Othakarhaka Foundation received a transformative gift of 16 laptops generously donated by News Corp now housed in the Othakarhaka Community Library in Mulanje. This donation follows News Corp’s contribution last year of 20 laptops, which were distributed to university students. Together, these donations mark critical steps forward in addressing digital inequality and expanding access to STEM education and digital literacy in rural Malawi.

OTK Community Library: Empowering rural youth with digital tools for a brighter future.

These devices are more than just machines, they are gateways to opportunity. For students who have never touched a computer before, the laptops are opening up a world of possibilities: from learning how to type and code, to accessing online resources, researching school projects, and even preparing for national exams. Many of these young learners come from households without electricity, let alone access to technology, and their community schools lack such resources as well. This donation is, therefore, nothing short of life-changing.

First steps into the digital world: Students at the OTK Library explore their new learning tools, thanks to News Corp’s donation.

Importantly, this initiative is helping bridge the digital divide between rural and urban learners. By bringing technology directly into the heart of the community, we are making digital skills part of everyday learning especially for girls, who are often the most left behind in STEM fields. These laptops are being used in workshops and after-school programs, ensuring access is inclusive and impactful.

“I had never used a computer before. Now I can research assignments and practice typing. I feel like I belong in the future.”
— Form 3 Student

This laptop donation marks more than a milestone, it signals the beginning of a new era for young learners in Mulanje. At Othakarhaka, we believe that when rural youth are equipped with the right tools, they rise beyond limitations. These 16 laptops are already opening doors to knowledge, creativity, and opportunity. As we continue to build a culture of learning, innovation, and empowerment, we remain deeply grateful to partners like News Corp for walking this journey with us, hand in hand.
