As of January 2026, Othakarhaka Foundation continued its Bricks of Hope Housing Project, supporting female-headed families facing extreme hardship in our surrounding communities.
Our first beneficiary of the year Mai Vailet Matias, a single mother of five from Mlava Village, who has now received her new home. Vailet’s life has been marked by significant challenges. When Cyclone Freddy destroyed her home in 2023, she and her children had to move into a single room shared with her mother and other relatives. The completion and handover of her house give Vailet and her family a fresh start,a safe space where they can rebuild their lives.
Grades Mussa, also a mother of five from Mulanje District, has faced repeated displacement. She lost her home during Cyclone Freddy and later lost her temporary shelter when Cyclone Jude struck. Today, she and her children live in rented accommodation provided by her church, while she works tirelessly to provide for her family. Grades’ story reflects the reality many households in the region continue to face, highlighting the urgent need for safe and reliable housing for vulnerable families.
Othakarhaka Foundation’s housing program prioritizes female-headed households experiencing severe vulnerability, including single caregivers, families affected by disasters, and children at risk. These January homes, and the families they’ve supported, reflect the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to providing safe shelter to those who need it most.
The Foundation expresses deep gratitude to its dedicated team and community volunteers whose efforts ensure that beneficiaries receive timely and life-changing support, and to IDI Africa for their partnership in making these homes possible.
