Othakarhaka Foundation had the joy of welcoming back Jeff Oliver, President of International Development Institute Africa (IDI Africa), and for the first time, his mother Connie Oliver. Their visit was a beautiful reminder of how partnerships grounded in kindness and shared vision can create lasting transformation in our communities.
Jeff’s visit comes with hands-on support for our education initiatives. He will be overseeing the construction of a modern latrine at Milonga Community Day Secondary School, a development that will not only improve sanitation but also promote a healthier learning environment for students. He also took time to see the progress of our Bricks of Hope housing project, which has already given many vulnerable families safe and dignified homes.
Connie, driven by her passion for empowering women, dedicated her time to working closely with women in our communities. From teen mothers to local entrepreneurs, participants gathered for a three-day training on entrepreneurship and small business development. Unlike traditional support models, Othakarhaka provides women with the materials and resources they need to start or grow their businesses ensuring sustainability and reducing dependency.
The training sessions were filled with energy, curiosity, and determination. Women engaged deeply, asking questions, sharing ideas, and envisioning how they could transform not only their own lives but also those of their families and neighbors. Connie’s presence offered encouragement and practical tools for building pathways to financial independence.
In true Othakarhaka spirit, Connie left behind more than just words and training, she planted a papaya tree on our premises. One day, when its fruits are ripe, we will remember her kindness and the love she shared with our community.
As Jeff and Connie’s visit reminds us, development is most powerful when it is community-led, compassionate, and sustainable. Together, we continue to build a future where kindness is not only passed on, but multiplied.
